Pakistani Fashion
And Vogue. The September Issue of US Vogue hit the stands and I savored each and every page and photograph. Then, I came across Carla Power’s article Revolutionary Style, discussing Pakistan’s Fashion Week amid the political turmoil and violence, and savored the magazine some more. Pakistan’s Fashion Week featured in US Vogue!? Needless to say, I was a little excited. While I was expecting to read the details about the designers and the latest trends, I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the revolutionary back story. The article focused on Ayesha “Tammy” Haq, CEO of Fashion Pakistan. She spearheaded and produced the whole Fashion Week event, making it happen against all odds and security concerns. Haq was so insistent because she wanted to instill hope to Pakistan through this under-represented facet of the talent & grace that lives within the fashion scene. Despite the riots, the opposition, the economic crisis and the corrupt government.

Men's attire is much like anywhere, except for those in robes and/or wearing head scarves. Young men are in jeans and t-shirts with slogans and sayings most in "engrish": there must be some factory in China that sends all its seconds and misspelled logos to Syria! Shoe fashions for hip males tends towards the looong toe, squared off at the tip.
Below are some crowd photos taken around shops in the souks, people milling, shopping, etc.

Tourists are advised to dress modestly and neatly: no knees (as in shorts or short skirts), no sleeveless tops (even if you look great in them). But, there are always those (especially if they travel in large groups and so are somewhat distant from the locals), who choose otherwise.Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Lebanon is Middle East's Fashion Capital
BEIRUT — The gowns are cut low in the front, slashing down to the navel, or low in the back, swooping below the waist, inset with delicate see-through fabric. They couldn't be further from the modest dress generally worn by women in the Muslim Arab world.
Yet these fashions come from Lebanon, a tiny Arab country of 4 million on the Mediterranean. This nation better known for military conflicts than the arts has produced an impressive crop of designers, such as Reem Acra and Elie Saab, whose work is showcased at celebrity events such as the Oscars and the Golden Globes.
"Lebanon's name has always been synonymous with war, but when it comes to fashion ... these designers really make us proud," said Laura Seikaly, 39, who was among a recent crowd of bikini-clad sunbathers on a beach north of Beirut. "I guess it comes from the society itself, the way Lebanese women dress. They're very courageous, even more than Europeans."
Perhaps best known among the long list of couturiers is Saab, a Lebanese icon. He catapulted to fashion superstardom in 2002 when Halle Berry accepted an Academy Award sheathed in a dazzling Saab burgundy gown — a first for a Lebanese designer.

Elie Saab Couture
Lebanese designer Elie Saab has long been a leading name in haute couture in the Middle East, where his romantic, crystal-encrusted gowns attracted princesses to his Beirut atelier, opened in 1982 when he was just 18 years old. His ready-to-wear line, which launched in 1998 in Milan, heralds the same feminine aesthetic as his couture dresses, with brightly colored silks, chiffons, pearl beading, and embroidered lace. With their Middle Eastern detailing and European sensibility, Saab gowns are also at home on the Hollywood red carpet; Halle Berry famously wore one to pick up her Academy Award in 2002.

Salwar Suits by Zarmina
The Sari is Back in Fashion in Pakistan
The sari is back in fashion in Pakistan, especially among the urban elite, nearly three decades after it went out of vogue due to the conservative policies followed by former dictator Zia-ul Haq. The popularity of Indian TV dramas such as Kyonki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahin Tu Hoga, Kumkum and Kahani Ghar Ghar ki among Pakistani women has lead to an increasing trend of wearing saris and has played a major role in setting a new fashion trend in the country.
20 years ago, one eminent Indian journalist was surprised to find one sari shop called Benares Sari House in Karachi, for he had very rarely seen ladies in Pakistan wearing saris.
But today in 2010, there are hundreds of textile emporia in Pakistani cities, (ranging from Butt Sari Boutique in Peshawar –Mohsins of Rawalpindi, Resham ghar of Islamabad and the Palki of Lahore) selling saris, from exquisite Parsi garas to Benarasi saris famed for its gold and silver brocade.
